Protect the Paws – Cat Declaw

Cats use their claws for a number of instinctive reasons. Pet owners choose to get their cats declawed to protect their furniture, their veterinarian recommends it, or they don’t know any better. Most people aren’t aware of the serious negative implications the surgery has on their cat.

The controversial topic has been a hot button item, especially since the documentary The Paw Project was released in 2012. The film shows the brutal aftermath on both exotic and domestic felines.

Many people believe declawing animals, or an onychectomy, is a simple procedure. In reality, the procedure involves amputating the first joint from each digit, while severing the tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. The surgery can result in permanent pain, arthritis, even lameness in the paws.

Infection is always a risk with onychectomies. In felines, the claws grow directly from the bone. If the tiniest piece of bone fragment is left post surgery, the socket will become infected, or the bone will grow back.

It is important to do thorough research prior to choosing an elective surgery on your pet. Declawing a cat can result in the following negative side effects:

  1. Chronic pain
  2. Tissue necrosis
  3. Behavioral issues due to undergoing the torture
  4. More likely to bite
  5. Ceasing to use the litter box
  6. Inability to defend themselves

There are other options instead of choosing to declaw your cat. Training your kitty to use a scratching post, instead of furniture, will eliminate most destruction. Buy Soft Claws for Cats – CLS (Cleat Lock System), Size Medium, Color Clear, they are easy to apply and last for weeks.

Declawing is now banned in major cities in California, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Burbank. The following countries have made declawing illegal: Australia, Austria, Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom.
